Program Overview

This specialization gives students the opportunity to examine and analyze contemporary legal issues relating to the delivery of public programs and social benefits. At an advanced level, students will examine: current developments in administrative law, theoretical perspectives on public administration, the law and application of judicial review principles, case studies in provincial and federal administrative specializations, institutions and policy-making processes, and the liability of the Crown and other public bodies.

 

This specialization is available for:

 

  • Law graduates with legal work experience or a strong demonstrated interest in administrative law.
  • Professionals without a law degree who have at least five years of related work experience in the fields of government, education, tribunal, policy, and regulatory work. For those who wish to add an advanced credential in administrative law to their professional profile.

Degree requirements

Option I: Coursework and Major Research Paper

  • The required courses for Administrative Law
  • 18 additional credits of coursework, at least 12 of which must be courses from the Administrative Law-related electives
  • A Major Research Paper (70 pages) in the Administrative Law field
  • Advanced Legal Research Workshop

 

Option II: Coursework Only

  • The required courses for Administrative Law
  • 24 additional credits of coursework, at least 18 of which must be courses from the Administrative Law-related electives
  • A Significant Research Paper (30 pages) as a means of evaluation for one of the Administrative Law required courses or related electives.

Program Duration

The Administrative law LLM can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis.

 

1. Part-time Administrative law LLM: Part-time students can complete the specialization over two years (6 credits per term over six terms). 

 

Program Format

This two-year, part-time degree requires completion of 36 credits obtained through coursework and a Major Research Paper, or coursework only.

There is no thesis requirement and your progress and performance is evaluated through papers, presentations and take-home assignments. Each LLM incorporates a research requirement, which is typically evaluated on the basis of one or more papers.

Tuition fees

The 2017/2018 tuition, which includes both years of the Professional LLM program and required course materials, is $24,132.02 for domestic students and $35,537.70 for international students, plus supplementary and additional fees.
