Program Overview

Market globalization, competition and technological changes have had a significant impact on securities regulation. In addition, the global financial crisis has raised a number of challenging issues concerning the appropriate regulation of complex products, how regulatory responsibility is shared among entities, and the nature of systemic risk. This specialization, taught by leading academics and practitioners, covers: Canadian capital markets including complex financial products; transactions and legal structures; regulatory systems including disclosure requirements and enforcement regimes; and current and emerging international issues and influences. Students will leave this specialization with a deeper understanding of the most important theoretical and practical issues confronting securities lawyers in Canada today.


This specialization is available for:


  • Law graduates with legal work experience or a strong demonstrated interest in securities law.
  • Professionals without a law degree who have significant related professional experience in the securities field, whether in the public or private sector, and wish to develop an advanced knowledge of securities law for professional purposes.

Degree requirements

Option I: Coursework and Major Research Paper*

  • The required course in Securities Law
  • 24 additional credits of coursework, at least 18 of which must be from the Securities Law elective courses
  • A Major Research Paper (70 pages) in the securities Law field
  • Advanced Legal Research Workshop.


Option II: Coursework Only


  • The required course in Securities Law
  • 30 additional credits of coursework, at least 24 of which must be from the Securities Law elective courses
  • A Significant Research Paper (30 pages) as the means of evaluation for one of the Securities Law courses

Program Duration


The Securities Law LLM can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis.


1. Part-time Securities Law LLM: Part-time students can complete the specialization over two years (6 credits per term over six terms). 


Program Format


This two-year, part-time degree requires completion of 36 credits obtained through coursework and a Major Research Paper, or through coursework only.

There is no thesis requirement and your progress and performance is evaluated through short papers, presentations and take-home assignments. Each LLM incorporates a research requirement, which is typically evaluated on the basis of one or more papers.

Tuition fees

The 2017/2018 tuition, which includes both years of the Professional LLM program and required course materials, is $24,132.02 for domestic students and $35,537.70 for international students, plus supplementary and additional fees.
