Program Overview

Market globalization, competition and technological changes have a significantly impacted on the regulation of businesses in Canada and around the world. This cutting-edge two year, part-time Professional LLM in Business Law, taught by leading academics and practitioners, will help you manage legal risks and understand the new realities of corporate regulation. At an advanced level, courses cover: Canadian corporate law principles and rules, legal duties of directors and managers, rights of shareholders, stakeholders and remedies available to them. The specialization will involve an in-depth examination of corporate finance and corporate structuring issues. Students will also explore the current regulatory system, including emerging international influences and trends.


This specialization is available for:


  • Law graduates with legal work experience or a strong demonstrated interest in business law.
  • Professionals without a law degree who have at least five years of senior work experience related to business law (such as finance, governance, regulatory, risk management work) who wish to add an advanced foundation in business law to their professional profile.

Degree requirements

Option 1: Coursework and Major Research Paper


  • The required courses for Business Law
  • 12 additional credits of coursework, at least 6 of which must be courses from the Business Law-related electives
  • A Major Research Paper (70 pages) in the Business Law field
  • Advanced Legal Research Workshop


Option II: Coursework Only


  • The required courses for Business Law
  • 18 additional credits of coursework, at least 12 of which must be courses from the Business-Law related electives
  • A Significant Research Paper (30 pages) as a means of evaluation for one of the Business Law required courses or related electives

Program Duration

The Business Law LLM can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis.


1. Part-time Business Law LLM: Part-time students can complete the specialization over two years (6 credits per term over six terms). 


Program Format

This two-year, part-time degree requires completion of 36 credits obtained through coursework and a Major Research Paper, or coursework only.

There is no thesis requirement and your progress and performance is evaluated through papers, presentations and take-home assignments. There is a research requirement, which is typically evaluated on the basis of one or more papers. 

Tuition fees

The 2017/2018 tuition, which includes both years of the Professional LLM program and required course materials, is $24,132.02 for domestic students and $35,537.70 for international students, plus supplementary and additional fees.
